Shoplifting Remains A Challenge For Newton Stores: Report

Newton police said Retailers struggle to balance a welcoming environment for shoppers with security measures to deter theft.

NEWTON, MA — Shoplifting arrests in Newton have increased in recent years in the city, according to a report from The Newton Beacon.

Newton police made 22 shoplifting arrests in 2024, up from 11 in 2023, before the number dropped to 12 in 2025, according to publicly available data. Police have also responded to cases involving organized retail theft, in which multiple people work together to steal merchandise from stores.

Lt. Amanda Henrickson of the Newton Police Department said that Newton's variety of shopping destinations, including The Shops at Chestnut Hill and retailers along Needham Street, can attract organized theft groups. Recent cases have included multiple arrests connected to alleged thefts at stores including Nike and Lululemon.

Local business owners say theft continues to be a concern. Shara Ertel, owner of Fulfilled Goods in Newton Centre, told The Newton Beacon she and her employees have become increasingly vigilant after suspected shoplifting incidents. Retail industry representatives also said theft can force businesses to invest in security measures and can impact employee safety and store operations.
