Newton South High School Selects Interim Leader For The Next School Year
The interim leader will take over as a permanent replacement is sought.
NEWTON, MA — The public school district announced that it has selected Caitlin Brown as the interim principal of Newton South High School for the 2026-2027 school year.
Brown will assume the role following the departure of current Newton South Principal Tamara Stras, who recently announced that she is leaving the district to become Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Education in Cambridge. Stras has led Newton South since 2021 and spent a total of 16 years in the district after beginning her career there as a chemistry teacher in 2009. During her tenure as principal, she oversaw grading policy changes, expanded technical education and dual enrollment opportunities, and led efforts focused on equity, belonging and student support systems.
Brown currently serves as a dean of students at Newton South, where she collaborates with counselors and case managers to support students' academic, behavioral and social-emotional needs.

In her current role, Brown has developed relationships with students and families, implemented disciplinary policies, supervised faculty and used data-informed strategies to support student success. Prior to joining Newton Public Schools, Brown served as principal of Andover High School. During her tenure there, she strengthened family partnerships, led professional development initiatives, managed large-scale school events and oversaw curriculum, instruction, budget planning and school improvement efforts.
Brown holds a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Licensure in Secondary Education from Bridgewater State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Trinity College. She also holds licensure as a principal and assistant principal for grades 9-12, history teacher licensure for grades 8-12 and an SEI Administrator Endorsement.

According to Newton Public Schools, Brown's experience in high school leadership, student support and organizational management made her a strong choice for the interim position. District officials said she will bring a commitment to maintaining Newton South's academic standards, a relationship-focused leadership style and a strong emphasis on student well-being and belonging throughout the 2026-2027 school year.
Throughout her career, Brown has worked to build inclusive school cultures, support diverse learners, lead complex organizations and foster strong relationships with students, families and staff. District officials said her breadth of experience and commitment to student success position her well to lead Newton South during the upcoming school year.
Stras' departure comes as Newton Public Schools prepares for leadership changes at both of its high schools. Newton North High School Principal Henry Turner also announced this spring that he is leaving the district to become superintendent of schools in Reading.
