Newton Parkway Facing Overnight Closures For Road Work

NEWTON, MA — A busy stretch of roadway will close overnight later this week as work continues on a major state transportation project.

Hammond Pond Parkway will be closed between Beacon Street and the driveway for The Shops at Chestnut Hill and The Towers at Chestnut Hill during overnight paving and curb work on Thursday, July 9, and Friday, July 10, Mayor Marc Laredo announced. The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation's contractor will perform the work on the Hammond Pond Parkway bridge over the MBTA Green Line between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. each night. Motorists will be detoured via Hammond Street and Langley Road.

The overnight work is part of DCR's Hammond Pond Parkway Improvements Project, an approximately $11.3 million effort to improve safety and accessibility along the corridor between Beacon Street and Route 9. The project includes reducing most of the roadway from four travel lanes to two, constructing a 12-foot shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists on the west side of the parkway, adding a sidewalk on the east side, upgrading drainage and lighting, improving intersections and crosswalks, and installing new landscaping. The redesign is also intended to improve access to nearby destinations, including Hammond Pond Reservation and Webster Conservation Area.

The roughly one-mile project is designed using a "complete streets" approach to better accommodate drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists while creating safer connections between neighborhoods, businesses, transit, and recreational areas. Construction began in 2024 and has continued in phases, with periodic lane closures and traffic shifts as work progresses. Drivers traveling through the area this week are encouraged to plan for additional travel time and follow the posted detour.
