Fire officials and a city engineer checked the building's structural integrity, ultimately deeming it safe and boarding up the damaged wall. The historic course remains open after the scare.
3. Police staffing challenges lead to vacant crossing guard posts (figcitynews.com) — Newton is short four school crossing guards this fall, leaving key intersections near neighborhood schools temporarily unstaffed while police struggle with broader hiring shortages. City leaders plan to use trained staff at two posts starting September 28, and residents concerned about safe routes to school can track locations, maps, and job details through Newton Public Schools and the Police Department.
4. Former Scituate library and historic Newton home hit the market (wcvb.com) — A historic Queen Anne Victorian in Newton, once home to Rev. Francis E. Clark and built as a missionary residence in 1895, is now for sale as its longtime owner downsizes.
