Got handmade clothes, quilts, afghans, etc.? Watch and listen as Deborah Chmielewski unpacks a trunk full of artifacts handmade by her high school home economics teacher, Betty Sacker. The third of five generations of women who made everything from drapes to lingerie, Sacker began sewing in the 1920s, and continued as commercial patterns and fabrics brought sophisticated designs into middle-class American homes. Dr. Chmielewski is author of the book Haume Couture Fashioned by Betty Sacker: Folklore of an American Home Dressmaker and Her Students.

Dig in your own closets and bring an artifact and short story to tell about it! At the Durant-Kenrick House and Grounds, 286 Waverley Avenue.
