Newton Preparing For Spring And Summer Road Pavement Project

More than 50 streets are slated to receive work.

NEWTON, MA — Mayor Marc Laredo announced the details of the city’s upcoming road paving project that is slated to begin this spring and take place through the fall.

The Department of Public Works will conduct work on 54 roads throughout Newton this year. The list contains both main streets and neighborhood roadways that were selected by using the city’s Pavement Condition Index. The PCI uses radar technology to analyze every road in Newton and give it a quality grade between 0 and 100.

“Our planned paving schedule for this year concentrates on roadway preservation and roads with an average PCI under 50,” Laredo said.

According to Laredo, Newton’s overall PCI grade for this year is currently 75.11, which is a two point improvement from last year’s 73.30.

Laredo emphasized that other roads could be added to the list and that overall it is subject to change. He also said that potential weather and underground utility infrastructure work could cause delays to the project.
