Newton’s first medical marijuana dispensary will soon open after officials approved the project this week.

Garden Remedies will open at 697 Washington St. in Newtonville. CEO Karen Munkacy is an anesthesiologist and breast cancer survivor who lives in Newton. She said her store will have 10-15 workers and sell marijuana that’s shipped in from outside the city. She said there will be a security system with cameras and alarms.

Some residents have expressed concerns about crime.

The Newton facility is one of about a dozen medical marijuana dispensaries across the state that have won approval and are scheduled to open in the coming months.
