Draft of Newton Revised Charter Proposal Approved: Report

Perhaps most significantly, the draft reduces the number of city councilors from 24 to 12 and imposes term limits.

NEWTON, MA – A draft of Newton's proposed charter revision was approved by the Charter Commission this week, according to a Newton TAB report. The draft will be made available to residents in March and will be voted on in the November election.

The draft cuts the number of city councilors in half to 12 from the current 24, and imposes term limits of three consecutive four-year terms for mayors and eight consecutive two-year terms for councilors, according to the TAB.

It also proposes eight of the 12 councilors have ward residency requirements but be elected at-large. The remaining four will be elected at-large as well, but residency requirements will not be imposed.
