Expanded Newton Dining Container Ban Starts Next Week

Beginning on March 1, Newton food establishments will be required to use takeout containers that are reusable, compostable, or recyclable.

NEWTON, MA — The expanded sustainable packaging ordinance that the Newton City Council passed with a 22-0 vote in September is set to go into effect next week.

Starting on March 1, all food establishments will be required to use takeout containers that are reusable, compostable or recyclable.

Those getting food in Newton will also no longer be given utensils such as forks, straws, chopsticks, and condiment packages. Those will only be available upon request in both takeout and in-restaurant dining as part of the city's "Skip the Stuff" campaign.

While many non-recyclable items, such as single-use plastic bags, plastic stirrers, Styrofoam and packing peanuts, have already been restricted in the city, this ordinance adds items such as non-recyclable black plastic containers.

Green recycling bins will be placed in establishments to collect clear plastic, aluminum and glass containers. Restaurants and retail stores will also phase in all compostable coffee cups and compostable plastic-lined paper containers.

Helium balloons will also be prohibited from being released.

Some restaurants in the city will accept reusable takeout containers. Those include 57 Lincoln, Grape Leaf Mediterranean Grill, Johnny's Luncheonette, Judith's Kitchen, Little Luke's Cafe, and Paddy's Public House.

Residents and visitors are also encouraged to bring clean reusable cups for filling with hot beverages at Starbucks and other locations.

Newton joins Andover, Brookline, Concord, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Northampton, and Williamstown in requiring that food service ware be reusable, compostable, or recyclable. Swampscott also recently approved single-use plastic restrictions at town meeting, while Danvers has a proposed Styrofoam ban article set for the spring town meeting warrant.
