ICYMI: High Lead Levels Detected in Water Fountain at Newton School

NEWTON, MA - Lead testing throughout the Newton school system revealed high levels of lead in a water fountain at Burr Elementary School Tuesday.

Officials responded by shutting down all water fountains in the school and providing bottled water to students while the cause of the contamination was examined, the Boston Globe reported.

Newton Mayor Setti Warren and Superintendent David Fleishman announced the findings at Burr in a letter to parents Tuesday.

The city's chief administrative officer told the Globe that it is not yet known how long the water may have been tainted or if any students or faculty were affected.

This year, lead levels at all 23 schools in Newton were tested; results from 12 schools have come back negative and the results from the remaining 11 are expected to be released Wednesday, according to the Globe.
