ICYMI: State Names Newton Level 2 District

The district remained at Level 2 this year, though both high schools were given Level 1 status.

NEWTON, MA – A new report from the state shows that Newton met the majority of its accountability goals this year, granting it Level 2 status.

In its latest report, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education classified the Newton Public Schools as a Level 2 District; several individual schools achieved Level 1 status as well, including both Newton North and Newton South.

All schools in the state and districts are classified into five levels with one being the highest and five being the lowest.

The progress and performance index combines information about narrowing proficiency gaps, growth, and graduation and dropout rates over multiple years into a single number, according to the DESE. All districts, schools, and student subgroups receive an annual PPI based on improvement over a two-year period and a cumulative score based on four years of data. For a group to be considered to be making progress toward narrowing proficiency gaps, its cumulative PPI must be 75 or higher.

Districts are classified by their lowest performing school.
