Live Artillery Shell Found In Newton

An old artillery shell was found on a property in Newton today.

NEWTON, MA — This afternoon someone called Newton to report they found what appeared to be an old explosive on their property. It turned out to be a live Naval artillery shell. As a precaution the state bomb squad, Newton fire and police departments responded. And the first responders called in the US Navy to come take a look and advise on just what to do about the old shell.

Police Lt. Bruce Apotheker, a spokesman for the Newton Police Department told Patch there was no need for concern.

The property is an old salvage yard, according to Newton Fire officials who said it looked like the owners were cleaning out the property in preparation for a real estate sale.
