Local Girl Serves Lemonade for a Cause

For three years running, Maggie Heberlein of Newton has donated the proceeds of her lemonade stands to charity.

Each summer for the past three years, Maggie, a 9-year-old girl with a huge heart, has set up a lemonade stand outside her home in Newton. Rather than keeping the proceeds for herself, she has donated all of the money to different charities that she has chosen.

Her stands have been much more than just lemonade. This year, she offered pink lemonade, apple cider, chocolate chip cookies, and cider donuts, which she displayed on her colorful, hand-crafted signs.

Her first year, she raised over $200 and donated it all to the Animal Rescue League of Boston. They were so appreciative and excited about the donation that they invited her on a tour of the facilities. Last year, she raised nearly $300 for the National Geographic Big Cat Initiative and The Prostate Cancer Foundation. And this year, she’s chosen to donate her proceeds to the COPD Foundation and the Newton Food Pantry.

It is clear that supporting these charities is something that she cares deeply about. After losing grandparents to prostate cancer and pulmonary disease, Maggie has chosen to donate to these charities because she “doesn’t want other people to be sad”.
