Newton Cares: And Here's 13 Reasons Why

Newton Cares, a coalition of local organizations is putting together a workshop on mental health and suicide prevention.

NEWTON, MA — Newton officials are inviting residents to a public meeting on May 24 about mental health and suicide prevention. The coalition of local organizations including hospitals, law enforcement, schools, community groups, and city agencies is hosting the session May 24 at Newton City Hall starting at 6:30 p.m.

The Newton Cares meeting is mainly geared at adults, especially parents, caregivers, educators, and others who work with young people, and will focus on how to engage in safe, positive discussions about suicide prevention and mental health, according to a statement from the group.

The issue of suicide, especially youth suicide, is still close to the heart in this city for many people. During the 2013 school year, three Newton teens took their lives, rocking the community and setting off a series of efforts aimed at helping the community heal and work to promote mental health and get to know the warning signs.
