Newton City Council Launches Discussion On Year-Round Gath Pool
City Council members have urged Mayor Ruthanne Fuller to enter into a full discussion of the possibility of an indoor facility.

NEWTON, MA â The Newton City Council has initiated a discussion regarding whether it is feasible to turn Gath Pool at Albemarle Field into an indoor facility.
In a Jan. 18 letter to Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, City Council members urged her to enter into a full discussion and analysis regarding turning the outdoor pool into a year-round facility.
"We can all agree that the current Gath Pool needs to be replaced,â says the letter. "So, the question is, do we simply rebuild what is currently on the site or do we invest in a facility that can be used all four seasons for decades to come?â

"Such a facility would be an exceptional resource for all Newton residents, whether they are young children or seniors; competitive swimmers or those learning to swim; or day time, evening or weekend users,â it continues.
The City Council brought up multiple objections to a year-round pool, including concerns about flooding, staffing costs, and project funding, they said they do not believe these are reasons not to move forward.

"We have learned over the years that when it comes to public facilities, we must look at them from a long-term perspective, even if that requires spending more time and money,â they said.
