Newton Councilor Amy Sangiolo Enters Mayor's Race

Sangiolo, councilor-at-large for Ward 4, announced her candidacy this week.

NEWTON, MA – Newton Ward 4 Councilor-at-Large Amy Mah Sangiolo is tossing her hat into the mayor's race. Sangiolo announced this week she will run for Mayor of Newton against City Council President Scott Lennon and Ward 7 Councilor-at-Large Ruthanne Fuller.

"I’m excited for the opportunity to continue my service to our community and be a part of shaping Newton’s future," Sangiolo said in a statement. "I pledge to engage Newton residents to take our City to the next level of success, with respect, diversity and accountability."

Sangiolo and her husband have lived in the Garden City for close to 22 years, and her three children have attended Newton public schools. They recently welcomed Sangiolo's 91-year-old mother into their home.

Sangiolo first ran for city council in 1997, she says, to "get government working for the people." She describes her approach as listening to people, respecting diverse views, making decisions based on data and what is best for the city as a whole and holding herself and others accountable.

"We can do much more to make our city government accessible, to make our community a real leader in education and the environment, to create housing opportunities that work for all, and to make all residents feel welcome and safe," Sangiolo said in a statement. "Let’s work together to ensure that Newton is moving forward for everyone."
