Newton Election Results: Who Won The Mayoral Preliminary? Fuller And Lennon

Tuesday, Sept. 12 Newton voters went to the polls to winnow the mayoral field down to two candidates. Ruthanne Fuller and Scott Lennon won.

NEWTON, MA — It's the question everyone is wondering. Who of the seven mayoral candidates vying to be on the November ballot made the cut? The polls closed at 8 p.m. in Newton. And right from the get go as the precincts started reporting results, Ruthanne Fuller took the lead, followed closely by Scott Lennon.

And that's how it stayed til all the results came in. Fuller thanked everyone who voted for her and then complimented her running mates before continuing the campaign.

"Newton stands at a crossroads and needs a strong, independent leader to ensure we remain a vibrant, inclusive community. As Mayor, I’ll deliver improvements that impact us all – making our schools the best in Massachusetts, enhancing our village centers and preserving our residential neighborhoods, investing our tax dollars wisely, and providing effective, responsive city services. My experience in the private, public, and non-profit sectors gives me the ability to think big within our means and deliver on a vision for all of Newton," she wrote to her supporters in a release.

By 9:12 p.m., with 32 of the 32 precinct votes calculated, Fuller took first place and Lennon took second.

"I'm not surprised that Ruthann had more than Scott," said Al Checchinelli, who came to watch the results roll in at City Hall. Checchinelli was decked out in suit and bright yellow tie, sporting a Newton South button.

Checchinelli was out campaigning earlier but stepped off the trail to go to Joe Denucci's wake. He says he's not sure who he'll vote for in November, but he is sure he'd like to work with the next mayor on a community health center.

Just after 9 p.m. all 32 precinct results came in, a total of 14,280 votes:

  1. Ruthanne Fuller — 5,234 votes — 36.6 percent of the vote
  2. Scott Lennon — 4,690 votes — 32.84 percent
  3. Amy Sangiolo — 3,503 votes —24.53 percent
  4. AL CECCHINELLI — 610 votes — 4.27 percent
  5. Eli Katzoff — 162 votes —1.13 percent
  6. RICHARD J SAUNDERS — 45
  7. GEOFFREY WOODWARD — 28

  • GEOFFREY WOODWARD — 3
