Who Is Running For Newton Mayor? 7 In The Race

There are seven candidates running. All seven have started to participate in the mayoral debates around Newton. Here are the basics.

NEWTON, MA — Well, it's official. The end of July began election season in Newton in earnest as candidates for mayor are now permitted to start placing signs up around town ahead of the September preliminary. They are also making the rounds when it comes to debates.

All seven Newton residents gathered the 400 signatures citywide to be considered for the November ballot. Two women and five men will face off in a number of candidate forums around the city until the September preliminary happening on Sept. 12 (here's what you need to know about that). Also included in the mix three current city councilors and four non councilors.

The list became final after August 10, which is how long the candidates had to decide to withdraw and how long folks had to one come forward with any objections to candidates running. The order of names appears in the order candidates withdrew papers from city hall and won't be set until after the August 10 Ballot Positioning Drawing.

Who's running for mayor?

Amy Mah Sangiolo- Newton city councilor and attorney, has lived in Newton nearly 22 years, Democrat




Al Cecchinelli- A chef by trade, a bar-certified attorney, life long Newton resident, active in the Republican Party.


Eli Katzoff - Executive manager at StormPort Productions, teaches Hebrew on the side, new to policitcs, Democrat.



Geoffrey Woodward - Is a life long resident of Newton and is a grant writer for the department of health and human services



Richard Saunders - Writer, technology manager and self described "independent moderate who has never joined a party." He's lived in Newton for the past 3 years.



Ruthanne Fuller - Newton city councilor, strategic planner, has lived in Newton for the past 24 years, Democrat.



Scott Lennon - Newton city council president, life long resident of Newton, budget director for the Middlesex Sheriff's office, Democrat.

August 23, 2017 - Last day to register to vote.

September 11, 2017 - last day to apply to vote absentee

September 12, 2017 Tuesday CITY PRELIMINARY ELECTION POLLS OPEN 7 A.M. - 8 P.M.

Nov. 7, 2017 - Election Day
