Newton Farmers Market To Celebrate 40th With Special Event
To celebrate its 40th year the Newton Farmers' Market is holding "Food, Fun & Farmers" on June 9 at City Hall.
From The City of Newton: On Sunday, June 9th grab your shopping list, skip the grocery store, and head toNewton City Hall for a food extravaganza featuring fifty local farms, restaurants, and food entrepreneurs. The Newton Farmers’ Market kicks off its 40th year with a special Sunday showcase, Food, Fun & Farmers, that includes a full market, food tastings, product raffles, andan opportunity to meet this season’s bumper crop of vendors.
“We’ve added thirty new vendors to our farmers’ markets this year,” said Judy Dore of Newton’s Parks & Recreation Department. “To better serve our community, we’re bringing in more prepared and specialty foods for families and food lovers.” The June 9th preview event is a great place to sample and buy these new items and stock up on farm produce.
Local farms are always the cornerstones of Newton’s farmers’ markets, but this season new vendors were selected with two important food trends in mind. First, according to a recent USDA report, meals prepared outside of the home play an increasingly large role in the American diet. Second, while most retail food group sales are flat, in 2018 The Progressive Grocer reported a 12.9% growth in specialty foods. Newton’s new vendors reflect this shifting food landscape.
