Newton Mayor Fuller Announces New City Solicitor

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced Wednesday night she has chosen Alissa Ocasio Giuliani to take over for Ouida Young who is retiring.

NEWTON, MA — Newton has a new city solicitor. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller announced Wednesday night she has chosen Alissa Ocasio Giuliani to take over for Ouida Young who is retiring next month as city solicitor for the City of Newton. Young was acting city solicitor for the past 10 months in Newton.

Giuliani served as the legal adviser and general counsel for the Boston Public Schools since 2008. In this
role, she has managed all aspects of the in-house legal office for the Boston Public Schools, an organization
with 125 schools, approximately 10,200 employees, and 55,500 students. She reported to both the City
of Boston Corporation Counsel and to the Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools. She has worked
directly with the Mayor of Boston, the City’s legal team, department heads, and the School Committee.

Her work has spanned civil litigation and employment discrimination to civil rights, special education matters, and contracts. For six years before becoming General Counsel, she served as the senior assistant corporation counsel for the City of Boston Law Department and the Boston Public Schools, according to the mayor.

"Ali brings not only her deep experience but also a terrific management style to Newton. Ali is a leader and a listener. She is strong, smart and savvy. She will provide sage counsel," said Fuller in the memo.

"I would like to add how grateful I am to Ouida Young for serving as an outstanding Acting City Solicitor for the past 10 months," said Fuller in a memo to deparment heads. "She is an exceptional person and lawyer. For so many, including me, she is the one we have turned to for many years as she is wise, trustworthy, knowledgeable, reliable, caring, grounded, and honest. We have been fortunate to have Ouida here in City Hall."

Young is retiring on Nov. 16. Giuliani will be sworn in Nov. 19. On Oct. 9 Giuliani is scheduled to come before the city council.
