Newton MCAS Results 2016

NEWTON, MA – This spring's MCAS scores have been released, and in all advanced categories, Newton came in well above the state average.

Below are the results from the sophomore exams in math, science and English, by percent of students to score:

Mathematics

Proficient or Higher:

Newton - 94 percent

State - 78 percent

Advanced:

Newton - 82 percent

State - 54 percent

Proficient:

Newton - 13 percent

State - 24 percent

Needs Improvement:

Newton - 4 percent

State - 15 percent

Warning/Failing:

Newton - 2 percent

State - 8 percent

English

Proficient or Higher:

Newton - 98 percent

State - 91 percent

Advanced:

Newton - 69 percent

State - 47 percent

Proficient:

Newton - 29 percent

State - 45 percent

Needs Improvement:

Newton - 1 percent

State - 6 percent

Warning/Failing:

Newton - 1 percent

State - 3 percent

Science and Tech/ENG

Proficient or Higher:

Newton - 93 percent

State - 73 percent

Advanced:

Newton - 61 percent

State - 29 percent

Proficient:

Newton - 32 percent

State - 44 percent

Needs Improvement:

Newton - 5 percent

State - 21 percent

Warning/Failing:

Newton - 2 percent

State - 5 percent

The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 mandates that every student be proficient in English/language arts and math by 2014. In Massachusetts, this proficiency is measured by the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS).
