Newton Police: Devaney the K9 Tracks Burglars Through Yard of Newton; Arrest for Breaking, Stealing From Meter; Mugging Off the T

The following was supplied by the Newton Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Incidents, Monday, April 13

  • At 12:05 p.m., police responded to the Lincoln Street and Mountfort Road area for a report of a woman screaming, and stating that she just got mugged. Additional units were called to the area. The woman said she got off at the Elliot T Station and was walking on Lincoln Street while talking on her cell phone to a friend. She noticed a man appeared to be following her. She also said that the man had been walking behind her for some time after she got off the train. The woman walked on to Lincoln Street from the T station and took a left onto Mountfort Road. As she approached the corner of Mountfort Road, the man began to quickly close the distance between them. After turning on to Mountfort Road, the man began sprinting toward her, and lunged for her cell phone. She screamed for help and the suspect took off, running toward Oak Terrace. There was no contact, and it appears her screams deterred the man from further actions. He is described as 5’9”, white, medium build, wearing a blue hoodie with the hood tied tightly against his face.
  • Dispatch gave out a BOLO from Boston for two B&E suspects observed breaking into cars and houses. The two suspects were described as Hispanic males, both in their 20s. One was seen wearing a grey hoodie and the other all black clothing. They were last seen in the area of Kenrick Street and Lake Shore Court, heading toward Newton. Newton police and other units responded to Kenrick Street. While canvassing the area, officers spotted a male emerge from the bushes in front of Farlow Road and run behind the house toward Kenrick Street. During the search, police located a broken cell phone, a gas card and a container filled with change in the bushes where the man had been. K9 Devaney and handler were dispatched and Devaney began his tracking, running through the back yard to Kenrick Street. Troopers and officers followed Devaney up the porch stairs, where he encountered two Hispanic males hiding in the corner. Both suspects were placed under arrest and taken into custody by Boston police.
  • Police responded to a B&E of a parking meter across from Marty’s Liquor Store. The caller reported seeing a white male with a blue shirt and baseball cap breaking into the meter. The caller also said she saw him throw the meter head over the fence toward the train tracks. She then watched him walk down Washington Street and turn left onto Harvard Street. Police found him. Darron Walter Curran, Sr., 45, 22 Carter St., Newton, was arrested and charged with destruction of property over $250, larceny over $250, attempted B&E into depository, receiving stolen property
