Newton Police Investigating Threat At Brown: School Update

Police logged a visit to Brown Middle School after 5 p.m. yesterday. The principal says police are investigating threatening behavior.

NEWTON, MA — It's not every day that the principal sends a note home to families letting them know all is well at school. But when school officials and police are investigating threatening behavior potentially putting a school at risk you do. This afternoon around 1:21 p.m. the Brown Middle School principal sent out a follow up email to parents and families of students at the school letting them know everyone was safe and the day was running smoothly.

"Students have been informed of the reason for the increased police presence at the school and our support staff is at the ready to speak with any students who may be concerned or anxious," it read.

The note was a follow up to a message Principal John Jordan sent out the evening before, letting parents know there was a police investigation happening, police presence would be ramped up at the school as a precaution and that school would run as normal. (Read the earlier Patch article) .

Jordan said police were still investigating the report of potential threats to the school, and praised the student who reported the information. But he did not say whether there would be increased police presence tomorrow.

The Superintendent's office did not respond to request for comment on that either. Here's the email the principal sent out:

Dear Brown Community,
I am writing to report the good news that our day here at Brown is safely underway and students and staff are moving through their normal schedules. Students have been informed of the reason for the increased police presence at the school and our support staff is at the ready to speak with any students who may be concerned or anxious.
Newton Police continue to investigate the incident. I will provide any relevant updates as they become available.
Ensuring a safe school environment is essential. As I mentioned yesterday, we are proud of the students who reported the potential threat. We will continue to work with all of our students to stand up for the security of our school and to respect the safety of others in our community.
As always, thank you for your partnership.
Best regards
John
