Newton Police: Man Charged With Assault With Knife

The following are excerpts from the Newton Police Department log. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

Incidents, May 17

  • Police responded to a report of an assault involving a knife that just occurred at Ricker Road. The suspect fled the scene in a dark colored Honda CRV. When police spoke with the victim, he said a few minutes earlier, he was standing outside with his friend when they saw a car speeding up Ricker Road southbound from Tremont Street. He went out into the street to try and slow down the oncoming vehicle, but as the vehicle got closer, he realized the vehicle wasn’t slowing down. He then jumped out of the way to avoid getting struck. The man then jumped out of the way to avoid getting struck. The reporting person said that as the vehicle passed him he suddenly slammed on his brakes and came to a screeching halt. The operator then exited his vehicle and approached the man. The reporting person said that he yelled, “There are a lot of children that live on this street and you can’t be driving like that.” At the same time, his friend yelled over, “Hey, he has a knife.” Thomas Joseph murray, 46, 24 Arlington St., Apt. 1, Newton, was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon with a knife and threats to commit a crime/murder.
  • Police responded to 43 Boylston St. (Legal Seafoods) for a report of past breaking and entering into a motor vehicle. The reporting party said that at around 10 p.m., she returned to the employee parking lot where she noticed that her vehicle had been broken into. Police saw that the rear passenger’s side window was smashed in. The following items were missing from the vehicle: 1 Wallet (Unknown Value) - 1 Credit Card - 1 Massachusetts ID - Appx. $40 in cash and loose change - 1 Pair of Running Sneakers - 1 Mass Turnpike Easy Pass stated that she parked her vehicle in the lot at approximately 11:30 hours on 5-17-15 and did not return to her vehicle until 8 p.m. While on scene police observed the vehicle parked next to hers had also been broken into. A Garmin GPS was also missing.
