Newton Resident, Former MIT Dean with Ties to Bernie Madoff Admits to Investment Scheme
Gabriel Bitran and his son, Marco, were charged with misleading investors.

Gabriel Bitran, a Newton resident and former MIT dean with ties to Bernie Madoff, will plead guilty to misleading investors who trusted him with about half a billion dollars.
Bitranâs 39-year-old son, Marco, a Brookline resident, was also charged in the scheme.
Authorities said from 2005 through 2011, the pair ran GMB Capital Management and lied to investors, falsely claiming they managed funds that delivered huge returns. They managed about $500 million and allegedly charged âmillionsâ in fees.

âIn 2008, several of the Bitransâ hedge funds had disastrous losses, resulting in investors losing 50â75 percent of their principal in many instances,â U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said in a statement. âNonetheless, in the fall of 2008, as their funds were experiencing these losses, Gabriel and Marco Bitran redeemed approximately $12 million of their own money from these hedge funds, while deferring other investorsâ requests for redemption.â
Bloomberg reported the pair invested clientsâ money in funds managed by Bernie Madoff, who was convicted of running the largest Ponzi scheme in history.
