Newton Residents Target of IRS Scam

NEWTON, MA - Residents are advised to be on the lookout for scam callers identifying themselves as IRS employees.

The scammer calls from a faux IRS phone number and demands money over the phone, threatening those on the other end with arrest if they do not comply.

Newton police are warning residents to be wary of phone calls where an individuals asks for money or personal identifying information such as date of birth, checking account numbers or social security information.

In cases where someone asks for personal information over the phone, hang up with the caller and reach out to the main business line of the organization they identify with to confirm their employment.

Caller ID can be fooled, so even if you recognize the number it could still be a scam.

Police ask that you spread the word to prevent further victims.
