📰 News we're reading

1. MBTA Reverses Plans For Yearslong Newtonville Station Closure (patch.com) — Newton commuters can expect the Newtonville Commuter Rail Station to stay largely open during a $50 million accessibility overhaul, after the MBTA scrapped plans for a yearslong closure. Instead, the station will only shut down for two shorter periods in 2027 and 2029 while it's rebuilt with high-level platforms, elevators, and other upgrades that should improve service and access citywide.

2. Newton Remains High-Risk for West Nile Virus as State Cases Rise (bcheights.com) — Newton remains on the state's high-risk list for West Nile virus as Massachusetts cases climb to eight, prompting fresh warnings from health officials and the mayor. Most infections are mild or unnoticed, but older adults and people with weakened immune systems face higher danger. Residents are urged to use EPA-registered repellents, cover up outdoors, and limit dusk-to-dawn activities until hard frost arrives.

3. Global Partners debuts new 125K-square-foot corporate HQ (cstoredive.com) — Global Partners has opened a significantly larger, amenity-filled corporate headquarters at 275 Grove St., right at Newton's I-95/Mass Pike crossroads. The 125,000-square-foot space brings hundreds of employees into the city, with on-site parking, transit access, and customer-hosting areas that could boost nearby businesses and reinforce Newton's role as a regional corporate hub.

4. Newton Cultural Council celebrates 47 grant recipients, opens 2027 funding cycle (figcitynews.com) — Newton artists and organizations just received 47 local cultural grants, and the city has opened the Newton Cultural Council's 2027 funding cycle, with applications due Oct. 15. City and state arts leaders highlighted Newton's growing investment in culture, including the New Art Center's expanding programs, and encouraged more diverse project proposals from across the community.

5. Newton woman fights to keep her miniature horse after neighbor complaints (nbcboston.com) — A Newton woman is fighting to keep Clover, the miniature horse she uses as a therapy animal, after the city denied her application over manure storage rules and neighbors' complaints about odor. Officials say the property doesn't meet setback requirements, while she insists she cleans carefully and wants to continue bringing Clover to local schools, hospitals, and nursing homes.
