Primary Election Sept 4 In Newton: What To Know

Go vote.

NEWTON, MA—Tis the season. The state primaries are on Tuesday, Sept. 4, and there are a few contested races as candidates try to get on the November Election Day ballot.

While it's not the most competitive year, there are a number of important races in this year's primaries both for the Democrats and the the Republicans. Watch for races for Senator in Congress, Representative in Congress, Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, Treasurer, Auditor, Governor’s Council, State Senator, State Representative for the 10th, 11th or 12th Middlesex District, District Attorney, Clerk of Courts, Registrar of Deeds.

Here's what you should know about that and the rest of the primaries:

When is this again? Primaries (all of them) will be held Tuesday, Sept. 4 (that's the day after Labor Day). Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m.

US Congress (Newton is part of Congressional District MA-4):

Republicans Geoff Diehl, John Kingston and Beth Lindstrom are vying for a chance to go up against incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Independents Shiva Ayyadurai (who has accused Warren of being a "fake" Indian), John Devine and Joshua Ford are also running for state senate.

Democrat and Newton software developer Gary J Rucinski is challenging Incumbent Rep. Joseph Kennedy for the nomination (see a NewTV forum of the two here.)

Governor:
Founder of what's been called by many as a anti-gay hate group Scott D. Lively, from Springfield, is challenging Governor Charlie Baker for the Republican primary. Jay Gonzalez and Bob Maissie attempting to go for Governor for the Democrats.

Lt. Governor: Democrats Former Obama aide Quentin Palfrey and comedian Jimmy Tingle are vying for the chance to go up against Republican Incumbent Karyn Polito in November.

Attorney General: Republicans James McMahon is running against Dan Shores for the chance to go up against Democrat Maura Healey.

Secretary of State: Democrat Incumbent William Galvin has a feisty field of challengers this year including fellow Democrat and Boston City Councilor Josh Zakim. Then once that primary is figured out the winner will face off against Republican Anthony Amore and Green Party candidate Juan Sanchez.

Treasurer: There's a Democrat a Republican and a Green Party candidate all running in November.

District 3 Governor’s Council: Marilyn Petitto Devaney and Nick Carter are vying for the ticket.

State Representative for the 10th, 11th or 12th Middlesex District:

In the 10th and 11th Middlesex, Third District, Nick Carter is going up against 20 year Incumbent Marilyn M Pettitto Devany for the Governor's Council. Recently the two were scheduled to debate on Newton's Cable Access TV station, but Devany, 80, pulled out at the last minute citing a previous conflict. She later said she had participated in all other debates, but she did not respond to multiple requests for comment from Patch.

District Attorney for Middlesex County DA: Incumbent Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan is up against Donna Patalano.

Democratic Representative in General Court: 15th District Suffolk: Jeffrey Sanchez and Nika Elugardo are vying for the seat.

Is it too late to register to vote for the primary?

Yes.

Wednesday, Aug. 15, was the deadline to register to vote or to change enrollment either to another party or to “unenrolled.” Voters who are unenrolled or enrolled in a political designation other than Democratic, Republican, or Libertarian, may choose a party ballot.
