Thieves Hit Rash of Cars in Overnight, Weekend Spree

Many cars, and several neighborhoods, were hit in a spree that targeted unlocked vehicles. Thieves took money, electronics and sunglasses.

Newton police took pages of reports over the weekend in what appears to be an overnight, weekend spree targeting unlocked cars in town - most of them parked in the driveway.

Below are excerpts from the weekend log:

On March 29, police responded to Oakland Ave. for a past B&E into a vehicle. The owner said his truck was parked in his driveway overnight and was unlocked. The perpetrator entered his car, stole approximately $5 in loose change and a Garmin GPS.

While conducting a canvas of the area, police found four other vehicles that had been broken into.

On the same day, police responded to Oakland Ave. for another car break. The owner said his car was unlocked and in the driveway, and someone had entered it overnight. He said that his center console was forced open and that a digital camera and an iPod Touch was taken.

Another resident on Oakland Ave. said that his car, too, was unlocked in the driveway and had been entered overnight. Approximately $3 in change was taken.

Continuing on Oakland Ave., another car owner said loose change was stolen from his vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, and unlocked.

Loose change was taken from another car on Oakland Ave., too, that evening. This car owner, too, had parked the vehicle in the driveway and it was unlocked.

Also on March 29, police responded to Bourne Street for a report of past B&E into a vehicle. The owner said she parked her car in the driveway around 7 p.m. the previous evening, and found in the morning that someone had rummaged through the car, which was unlocked. Loose change was taken.

Police responded to Charles Street on March 29, taking a report of a past B&E into a car. This person said she hadn’t used her vehicle in a couple of days, but believes that the break occurred sometime overnight. It was unlocked, in the driveway, and some Michael Koors sunglasses were taken.

Also on March 29, a resident of Oakland Ave. visited Newton police headquarters to report that her car was broken into on the previous night. She said someone entered her unlocked 2010 Toyota Rav4, parked in the driveway, and went through the glove compartment. A pair of Calvin Klein sunglasses were stolen.

A resident of Charles Street, on March 29, reported that his car, parked in the driveway, was broken into overnight. It was unlocked, and it was parked in the driveway. The owner was unclear if anything was missing.

On the same day, police responded to Evergreen Ave. for a report of past B&E into a vehicle. Someone during the night entered the owner’s unlocked car, which was parked in the driveway.

Back to Charles Street, police took a report of a past B&E into a car. Sometime during the night, two of this person’s cars were entered into. Both were unlocked. Both were in the driveway.

On Commonwealth Ave., a car was broken into overnight. It was unlocked, and parked in the apartment complex. Some cash was stolen.

Canvasing Evergreen Ave., police spoke with a resident who said his car, too, was broken into overnight. The car was parked in the driveway and unlocked. Nothing was taken.

Also on Evergreen Ave., a woman stated that her car, unlocked and in the driveway, had been broken into overnight and two $20 bills and approximately $20 in loose change was taken.

Back to Oakland Ave., on March 29 police took a report of a past breaking and entering into a motor vehicle. The owner said that sometime in the night, someone entered her unlocked car, in the driveway, and took the car’s registration.
