Uptick In Break-Ins In Newton: Police Logs
Since Wednesday, Dec. 13 there have been at least 15 reported car break-ins.

NEWTON, MA — In the past seven days there have been at least confirmed nine car break ins, according to data from the Newton Police, but on Thursday, Dec. 14 there were eight separate reports of cars being broken into. Between Wednesday and Monday there were at least 15 reported car break ins. Compare that to the year to date statistics in Newton: Since January, there have been 170 according to police data.
Here are a sample of what police responded to between Wednesday Dec. 13 last week and Monday, Dec. 18. The information was taken from the Newton police call logs and the information that the Newton Police sends to the media about those incidents. Just because someone reports an incident doesn't mean that's the way it actually happened and arrests do not imply conviction.
Wednesday, Dec. 13
Drunk Driver: After a police officer watched a black Cadillac blow through a red light at the intersection of Washington and Elm streets he pulled over the driver and then arrested him. Police arrested Arthur N Pappas, 40, of Worcester and charged him at 10:40 p.m. with driving under the influence of alcohol and for failing to stop at the red light

Attempted break in: Someone called to report an attempted break in on Central Street.
Thursday, Dec. 14
They took what? Someone called police to report that while their pickup truck was parked on Freeman Street someone stole the truck bed cover.

So many break ins: At least eight reports of separate car break ins came into police, including four on Warren Street and four on Elgin Street.
In progress?: Someone on Clinton Place called to report they thought a home was being broken into.
Friday, Dec. 15
Car break ins: A Warren Terrace resident called to report someone broke into their car and stole items.
Break in: Someone on Amherst Road called to report a break in.
Larcenies: Two calls about potential larcenies came in to police, one about an incident that happened at Weeks Housing on Hereward Road, and another later in the day that was reported to have occurred on Washington Park.
Saturday, Dec. 16
Car break in: An Elgin Street resident called to report their car had been broken into.
House break in: Around 1:40 p.m. someone called to report there were three suspicious white guys in an SUV outside a home on Graylock Road. Police went to check it out and found the rear sliding glass door had been smashed at the home and it looked as though someone had gone inside. The master bedroom appeared to have been ransacked.
Another one: A Commonwealth Ave resident called to report that her house had been broken into. Police noted the master bedroom appeared to have been ransacked.
And: About an hour later someone on Exeter Street reported a break in, too.
Sunday, Dec. 17
Vandals: A Freeman Street resident called to report destruction of property.
Car break ins: At least two Elgin Street residents called to report separate car break ins, A Central Street resident also called to report someone had broken into their car.
Shoplifting: An employee at the AT&T store on Boylston Street called to report that someone had swapped out a demo phone with a dummy phone. Police reviewed the security video, which they said showed a black man wearing a hat that covered his face come into the store on Dec. 16 at 10: 42 a.m. switch the phones and then leave.
In progress? A Carlisle Street resident called to report they thought their home was being broken into.
Monday, Dec. 18
Car break in: Someone called at 8:41 p.m. to report a car was broken into on Central Street near the Centenary Village. Another person called to report a car break in on Middle Street.
Larceny: Someone at a business on Washington Street reported a larceny.
Shoplifting: An employee at the Newtonville Camera and Video store on Walnut Street also reported someone took something at 6:14 p.m.
