1. North Adams to wave property taxes for parents of fallen veterans (berkshireeagle.com) — North Adams will now fully waive property taxes for eligible Gold Star parents, after the City Council unanimously adopted a new Hero Act provision on April 14. The change currently affects one local family but could help others in the future, with city officials saying the cost to taxpayers will be minimal. A new Hometown Hero celebration on May 22 will further honor fallen service members.

At soon-to-close Hampshire College, all students can now stay on through fall semester (bostonglobe.com) — Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts in North Adams is stepping up for Hampshire College students, promising no enrollment cap and efforts to match or improve their costs. As Hampshire prepares to close, multiple colleges are arranging transfer paths, but MCLA’s open-door stance could bring new students, faculty, and energy into North Adams’ campus and community.

3. Hornets Sweep Lee (iberkshires.com) — McCann Tech’s softball team lit up Disanti Field in North Adams, pounding out 44 hits to sweep Lee in a doubleheader, 18-0 and 20-1. Behind standout days from Shaylee Lawson, Aiden Champney, and strong pitching by Emma LeMire and Avery Lane, the Hornets stayed unbeaten at 8-0 and now look ahead to hosting Mohawk Trail after vacation week.

Berkshire Agricultural Ventures launches $242K effort to connect local farms with schools, hospitals (berkshireeagle.com) — A new $242,000 federal planning grant will help Berkshire Agricultural Ventures design ways to connect local farms with schools, hospitals and other institutions across the Berkshire-Taconic region, including North Adams. The nonprofit hopes to rebuild markets lost during the pandemic, expand access to fresh local food, and eventually get items like locally raised beef and vegetables into cafeterias throughout the area.
