Franklin, Thomson Students Give to Senior Center

The Senior Center was graced with more than $1,100.

Who said Christmas time was the only season for giving? Over at the they can certainly feel the love in June.

Last Monday, the Franklin School PTO donated $1,000 to the Senior Center. They had done a Fun Run fundraiser and raised $10,000 and wanted to give 10 percent to the Senior Center.

That same day, the Center got another gift -- $150 from the fifth graders at Thomson Elementary School.

The fifth graders recently visited the Senior Center for an ice cream social and hung out with some seniors for a bit.

"The excitement by both the children and the seniors the day of the ice cream social was wonderful." Elder Services Director Irene O'Brien said. "We both have so much to learn from each other."

The kids had such a fun time, they wanted to give something back. Well, the fifth graders also recently held their Pasta Night recently, and they made more money than expected. So rather than use their surplus to throw themselves a party or something, they decided to give it to the Senior Center.

O'Brien said the donations will go toward programs and services that directly impact seniors, such as special guest speakers for the lecture series or entertainment for a special event. The money could also be used to offset the costs of specialty teachers who run programs there.
