Obituary: William S. Carman, II, Shared His Love of Music as Educator and Choral Director for the Salem Public Schools

Served in the U.S. Air Force during both WW ll and the Korean Conflict

William S. Carman, II, 87, of North Andover died peacefully Tuesday morning at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen.

Born in Upstate New York on April 24, 1927 to the late Clyde S. and Kathlyn (Broderick) Carman, Bill earned his Bachelor’s degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburg, followed by a Master’s Degree from Columbia University Teachers College in New York.

Bill served his country in the U.S. Air Force during both WW ll and the Korean Conflict, but found his calling and occupational passion as music educator and choral director. The vast majority of his working years were spent sharing his love of music with the youth in the public schools of Salem MA, until his retirement in 1989. Throughout his life, he provided complete artistic direction and leadership for a myriad of productions, musical and choral ensembles and community organizations, leaving his mark indelibly on so many lives.

Bill is survived by his wife of 13 years, Margaret (O’Donnell) Carman, and by his children: sons William S. Carman, III and wife Lisa of Sandown NH, Michael Carman and wife Susan of Tewksbury, and Christian Carman of Ocala, FL; and daughters, Stephanie Rogers and husband Owen of Tewksbury, Suzanne Pooler and husband Wayne of Wilmington, and Bettina Carman of Daytona, FL. Also among his survivors are his grandchildren: Lindsay, Katelyn, Matthew, Kiera, Chelsey, Elijah, Andrew, Madelyn, Gaelan and Georgia, and one great granddaughter, Katrina. He is also survived by his former wife, Wilma (Naujoks) Carman of Florida and was predeceased by his wife Eleanor (Davin) Carman and his daughter Debra Carman.

A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, January 17 at 10 AM at St. Michael’s Church in North Andover. A private family burial will take place in New York at a later date.

Family and friends may call on Friday January 16 from 5-8 PM at the Conte Funeral Home, 17 Third Street, North Andover.
