SELMA, CIVIL RIGHTS & THE JEWISH PEOPLE: The Legacy of Abraham Joshua Heschel

Susannah Heschel

is the Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College in the Department of Religion. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, the history of biblical scholarship, and on modern Jewish thought. Her books include Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, which won a National Jewish Book Award, and The Aryan Jesus: Christian Theologians and the Bible in Nazi Germany. She has also edited and co-edited several books, including Betrayal: German Churches and the Holocaust; Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity: Essays of Abraham Joshua Heschel; American Jews and Multiculturalism; and On Being a Jewish Feminist. She is currently writing a book on the history of Jewish scholarship on Islam.

She is the recipient of numerous awards and grants, including a 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship, a Carnegie Foundation scholar’s grant in Islamic Studies, a personal grant from the Ford Foundation, and year-long fellowships at the National Humanities Center and the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin.
