Two Scholarships Awarded by North Andover Garden Club to Local High School Seniors

The North Andover Garden Club Scholarship Committee is very happy to announce two recipients of the 2026 Memorial Scholarship. Sophia DeFillippo and James Cohne will each receive $2,500 toward their post-secondary education.

Sophia DeFillippo graduated this year from Central Catholic High School and intends to study Environmental Law at the College of the Holy Cross. Sophia has built and deepened her passion to protect the environment throughout elementary, middle and high school. At Central Catholic she was very involved in activities that have helped protect natural resources and promoted sustainability. She organized environmental workshops, started textile drives, launched school wide recycling programs and served on the board of the school’s Environmental Club.

James Cohne is a recent graduate of North Andover High School and has plans to study Environmental Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder. The foundation of his love of the outdoors and respect for the natural world was set early with his family on their vacations and weekends spent hiking, camping and exploring the national parks. However, it was a summer semester course in 2023 at Yellowstone and Grand Tetons National Parks studying ecology, glaciation, geology, river morphology and human impact that solidified his passion to learn more about the environment and global environmental issues.

Both are outstanding students and well deserved of the scholarships. They represent the Club's mission to advance the science of horticulture, the conservation of natural resources, and the development of civic beautification. We wish them all the best!

Funds for the scholarships come from the generous support of the NAGC's Annual Plant Sale. The NAGC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization established in 1920.
