NORTHBOROUGH, MA — A surge of ambulance calls stretched the Northborough Fire Department's on-duty resources Wednesday morning.

The duty shift responded to six emergencies between 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., most of which resulted in hospital transports, the Northborough Fire Department said. Shortly before noon, crews were handling two of three overlapping ambulance calls while mutual aid responded to the third.

The department did not disclose the locations or nature of the calls, patients' conditions or which agency provided mutual aid.

Northborough operates three paramedic-level ambulances under a system that assigns the newest as the primary unit, the second-oldest as the secondary unit and the oldest to backup and special-event coverage.

Fire officials thanked the department's mutual aid partners for assisting when call volume exceeds its available resources.
