Athlete of the Week: David McGovern

Algonquin's David McGovern doesn't slack off when it comes to chasing success.

Leaving a legacy behind is all the motivation senior David McGovern needs to finish the season strong. “My biggest goal is to carry on a tradition of success,” says McGovern. “The banners that stick out to a soccer player the most in our gym are the back-to-back state championships.” A lifelong passion for soccer has driven this Tomahawk to perform at his best, because chances are his playing days at Algonquin may never be replaced.

Northborough Patch talked to McGovern, who had just finished practice with the Tomahawks for his thoughts on the season and who he draws inspiration from.

Northborough Patch: Are you happy with the way the team is playing this season? Do you expect to repeat as district champions?

David McGovern: I am very happy with the way the team is playing thus far. I think we have huge potential to go far into the tournament as well. One of the goals from the player’s side is to reach the next step, that being the state final game. I think we are able to do that if we stay on course.

NP: Given the considerable talent on the Tomahawks, are there any gaps that you need to fill as the season progresses?

DM: I believe that we are all set in terms of filling positions. Our starting 11 is strong with most of us playing together for the majority of high school. Along with this the players coming off the bench are exceptional players most of whom would be starters at other schools. That being said, when we do need to go to the bench our quality doesn’t drop.

NP: Could you tell me about a time when your team was behind and you acted as a leader?

DM: Personally, I can’t really say there was one specific time. However, I think every day the captains (Justin Kody, Alex Wallace, Mark Keller, Brendan O’Reilly, and myself) all strive to lead by example for our teammates. Whether it be carrying out equipment, leading warm-ups, or helping out kids in drills — we work as a unit more so than individuals.

NP: How do you prepare for a game differently now that you are a senior?

DM: If anything, I'm more relaxed now as a senior. When I was a sophomore, every game I had "the deer in headlights" look going on the field no matter the circumstance. Now, I realize that the more I calm my nerves and just focus on the task at hand, the better I play.

NP: Do you have any plans to play soccer in college? Or, are you going to focus solely on academics?

DM: I am not planning on playing any soccer in college at the time being. I think freshman year I will focus on academics and get myself comfortable with the new environment, wherever that may be.

NP: There are many elite soccer players that we could talk about. But who's style do you emulate the most?

DM: Adam Johnson. He plays left wing for Manchester City in the English Premier League and before that, Middlesboro. He plays with incredible pace and has a wonder of a left foot. Despite us playing different positions, I think he’s awesome to watch.

NP: Do you think you'd have any luck going against Johnson?

DM: Not a chance (laughs).
