Athlete of the Week: Mike Halloran

This season, Algonquin quarterback Mike Halloran is still learning how to lead on the field.

Ever since junior Mike Halloran landed the quarterback role for the Tomahawks, his teammates have seen him as a leader. He makes his presence known by demonstrating pure footwork and quickness in the pocket. And like any athlete his age, Halloran just wants to keep getting better. "When it comes to football," he said, "you have to learn how to keep your composure."

Northborough Patch learns exactly what's on the young quarterback's mind as he dishes on the keys to a successful season, his biggest influences, and how he spends his time off of the field.

Northborough Patch: We mentioned in our fall sports preview how important it is for the team to get off to a faster start this season. You guys just came off a season opening victory against Burncoat. How do you keep it going?

Mike Halloran: As a team, we've been clicking from the beginning of pre-season and we just have to keep working hard and keep our good chemistry flowing.

NP: Part of the maturing process as a quarterback is putting the team on your shoulders during the toughest times. What are the keys to being a leader?

MH: I feel that being a leader calls for a certain degree of calmness and not letting too much get to your head, and distract you from the task at hand. Keeping a clear mind and letting the other guys know that we are in it together — that's what's going to determine our success as a team.

NP: Say you're being criticized for a play you called late in the game. Do you block it out, or do you feed off of it?

MH: Life is about learning from your mistakes, so I do take into account some feedback and learn from my mistakes. But, I also keep my head up and I don't let it get under my skin.

NP: Who has had the most influence on your high school football career?

MH: Several people have influenced me in my high school career, ranging from my coaches to my friends and family. They have each taught me different aspects and have helped me see each situation from a different angle.

NP: Speaking of influences - in all the things that you've done as a football player, what gives you the most satisfaction?

MH: Nothing gives me more satisfaction than knowing I was part of a strong, cohesive team effort that led to a win.

NP: Currently, are you looking at any schools?

MH: Every kid has a dream school or two in mind, but right now I'm just focusing on getting the right grades and performing my best on the field to put myself in the best situation possible.

NP: What's blaring on your iPod before kick-off?

MH: My "pump up" playlist ranges from the classic rock of AC/DC to Wiz Khalifa. All my songs help me get in the zone.

NP: How do you unwind after a game?

MH: I either just kick back and relax with my family, or hang out with my friends for a little while. Either way, it's a good time.
