Cultural Council Gives Grants to Local Recipients

Schools and concert series get a good chunk of this year's cultural grants.

This year's Northborough Cultural Council grant recipients have been announced, and the list includes 17 individuals and/or organizations that are considered important in expanding local culture.

The Assabet Valley Mastersingers were awarded $375 for their 2012 concert series, and producer Richard Clark was given $150 toward Hemingway Alive. The Historical Commission was granted $125 for its family history workshop, and Scott Jameson was given $200 to promote the summer reading program.

Local schools received funds, too: the Proctor School got $400 for its Folktales Come Alive program; the Peaslee School for two musical programs totaling $1,480; St. Bernadette's received $250 for its Prismatic Laser Program; and Sachem Magazine, the student literary magazine, received $350.

The Northborough Area Community Chorus was given $240 for its summer concert series while the Northborough Community Affairs Committee was granted $400 toward its annual summer concert series. Tower Hill Botanic Garden, which hosts an annual concert series, received $150. And Symphony Pro Musica's Fire in Winter will get a $100 boost from a cultural grant.

Rumors are that the Northborough Recreation Department plans to coordinate a coffeehouse concert series. The Cultural Council gave the department $200 toward this project. Scott Tooker, who will  be producing "Ragtime and Romance" received $100 and Women of Note received $200 toward "Harmony for Hunger.

John Root, who presents "Edible Perennial Gardening," received $200 for his workshop/lecture.
