The Howling Wind...

Thought and Poem

Thought and Poem – March 21, 2015

Just when you begin to put away the winter shovels, ice picks and salts, when you start to pack up the mittens, hats and scarfs and put these away until next year…just when you start thinking it is beginning to look like spring….the howling winds bring back the cold, possibly more snow and we have to be more patient for the these to blow away so that truly we will be able to enjoy all the incoming signs of spring.

When the winds blow during the month of March, we get hopeful for the warmer days and we may dream about what we will do at that time while we turn our heat back on and sit our chairs closer to our heat sources and try to stay warm.

I had a chill the other night so I decided to make some chicken soup and have a cup of hot cocoa while the pot simmered on the stove. As I stood there stirring the pot I could feel a draft caused by the wind near the kitchen window and I needed to make myself a note that it was still too early to start my plants for my garden so I should put the soil bags and seeds away for another couple of weeks. Suddenly I began feeling like I needed to cheer myself up and I knew a nice bowl of delicious soup would hit the spot and deliver me into more cheerful thoughts.

Now don’t get me wrong, I know the wind has a job to do and its does the job well. But, I wonder if we could just get the winds to hurry up, do what they need to do and move on so that we can free ourselves from any leftover cabin fever and get right in to the nice weather where we will be able to do some of what we wished all winter to do.

The Howling Wind

The wind is howling outside my window,

It is hard to tell if it will bring more rain or snow.

But I can tell you what I do know,

Wind blowing around our house means it is going to be cold.

Chicken soup is cooking on the stove; the kettle’s lid is letting off some steam,

There is nothing like a nice bowl of hot soup, to warm cold, and aching bodies,

Along with the soup, a cup of hot coffee, cocoa or tea, will aid in our getting some relief.

The tea kettle is whistling its song, letting us know the hot water is ready.

The curtains by the windows are dancing slightly,

As the wind blows against her panes, I can feel her breeze.

We gather around the wood stove that is piping hot, and giving off some nice heat,

The rocking chairs that surround the stove are occupied; those sitting in them are wrapped in quilts, the chairs are creaking.

The wind is howling,

The aroma from the chicken soup cooking, and the tea kettle singing,

The wood stove, the creaking rocking chairs, the warm quilts, can be part of winter and or when the wind begins to howl in the spring.
