Nor'easter Cancels Major Northborough Applefest Events

NORTHBOROUGH, MA — An annual multi-day fall community celebration in Central Massachusetts will have a shorter schedule this year because of the looming nor'easter.

Northborough Applefest is still happening this weekend, even amid an early-season Nor'easter that could bring days of heavy rain, damaging winds and coastal erosion. However, organizers announced Wednesday that the Applefest parade, fireworks, and several other outdoor activities have been canceled.

Organizers expect a final decision on the Applefest 5K Road Race on Thursday.

Canceled events include the Bubble Guy, parade, Fire Department open house, Church of the Nativity petting zoo and Divine Dog Show, fireworks, food trucks, barbecue and music. St. Rose of Lima’s roaming train and family fun day, Cub Scout Pack 55’s Pinewood Derby and inflatable archery and the classic car show were also canceled.

Several Applefest Events Will Still Go On

Despite the cancellations, several Applefest traditions will continue throughout the weekend.

Applefest events continuing Thursday include the luncheon and bake-off at the Senior Center and a presentation on St. Rose of Lima Parish’s 140-year history at the church hall.

Friday’s schedule includes the Friends of the Library book sale at Northborough Free Library, a concert at Trinity Church, and the Northborough Historical Society’s “White Cliffs After the Wessons” program.

In addition to the craft fair and farmers market, Saturday’s events include the veterans art show and chicken barbecue at the American Legion, the library book sale, activities at Trinity Church and the Historical Society’s ice cream social and Art in Bloom event.

The Boy Scout pancake breakfast at Lincoln Street School is scheduled for Sunday. The Historical Society’s ice cream social and Art in Bloom will also continue that day.

The Rotary Club of Northborough is monitoring the weather and considering options for its Sunday street fair. Applefest organizers said they will post updates on the club’s Facebook page. Vendors will be contacted directly and questions can be emailed to rotaryclubofnorthborough@gmail.com.

Organizers thanked volunteers, community groups, vendors, sponsors and local businesses for their work on the annual celebration.
