PTO Boosts Programs at the Melican School

For many schools, the PTO has now become a financial IV for the school, helping with fundraisers and grants to boost program offerings, school trips and events.

Co-chairs Kim Edwards and Deidre Merritt of the s PTO recently gave an update on what its been up to to the Northborough School Committee.

"I'm really proud of the work we've done so far," said Merritt. "We're able to offer superior programming that we wouldb't otherwise be able to do."

Highlights in recent months include a magazine drive that grossed $32,000. As compared to last year's $40,000 gross, the PTO hopes to meet that amount or exceed it.

Last year proved big in technology, as the PTO was able to raise money for Kindles and Nooks for the library, as well as $1,600 for field trips, $3,000 to attend Shakespeare Now. $1,400 was raised for scholarships and the Environmental Overlay Program. Teacher grants totaling $4,200 was raised.

"We don't have a whole lot left in the bank account, but we can get through the school year," said Merritt.

Edwards added that the PTO also organizes the Northborough Stands anti-bullying project, this year holding a road race and promoting the event at Applefest. The national anti-bullying program Rachel's Challenge also came to the school. The Melican PTO also hosted an open house, inviting all Melican students and parents to the event.

"It was a nice curriculum night, and a chance to participate and meet the teachers," said Edwards.

Edwards, who also acts as secretary for the group now, adds that there is a position open for secretary. A monthly group, she said "it's not a high stress position."
