Road Race in Memory of Algonquin Teacher is Back On

It's the third year of the race, but the "first annual" Algonquin Regional 5K. We'll explain.

Jeanne Arathuzik was an alumni of Algonquin Regional High School, and later became a belover Spanish teacher there for 15 years. An international traveler, she loved to coordinate trips with her students.

Arathuzik lost her battle with breast cancer in January of 2009.

Shortly after, the Algonquin Regional Teachers' Association worked to come up with a fundraiser in order to give scholarships to students in Arathuzik's name. Deciding on a road race, for two years the Jeanne Arathuzik Memorial Road Race was very successful.

Last year, the race wasn't held. But this year, Gina Johnston and Karla Steele, who are advisers of the Girls Learn International Club, decided to bring it back, calling it the Algonquin Regional 5K.

It will continue to fund the Jeanne Arathuzik Travel Scholarship and the ARTA scholarship in Arathuzik's name for seniors who are planning to further their world language study.

"The funds will also go to the Girls Learn International Club," said Steele.
