The Agony of Defeat

Thought and Poem – August 13, 2014

Who doesn’t love to watch a team play a game, in a sport they love and love even more to follow? Many follow their teams from the opening day of the season, right down to the last possible moment of the last game of the season. If by chance you follow a team that happens to takes it to the championships, you might get to see them play a few extra games in some kind of play- off.

If you are one of those die-hard sports fans, you go through the season always wondering if your team will win the play-offs. You already know that this cannot be decided until the final moments of the game, but you will still wonder and hope. No matter what happens, you endure the pressures that build up because of the excitement that fills the air when each game is played. In the end, when all is played and done with, there will be the victory of success or the agony of defeat.

Our lives can be like games sometimes. We have pressures to work around, or to work through. We have excitement when dreaming our dreams for our tomorrows. We have the victory of seeing some of our dreams come true and then like in everything else in life, we can experience the agony of defeat when we lose out on opportunities that could have slid us into the base at home plate. Or, if we never take the chances needed to play all of fields of our lives we might never feel the victorious exaltation that comes from succeeding.

There are some of us who keep trying no matter how many times they swing and miss at reaching their goals. They don’t care about anything else in life but to know that they are doing their best and that they keep their hopes on that homerun for every minute they play in their game of life. After all, to them, in their life’s game, they have the power to determine if they are a winner in the end. Did they give one hundred percent? Did they have the right attitude? Did they hustle when they needed too? Did they challenge themselves to see a victorious ending no matter what obstacles tried to hold them back? Only they can truthfully give the answer to this. But just for the sake of summing this all up, I want everyone to know that I personally am sticking with my game of life right down to the end and that I am giving life my best shots no matter how many times I might swing and miss.

What about you? Are you swinging at all the opportunities in your life’s game or are you just warming the bench? Share your thoughts with us…Jeanne Claire Probst

Defeat

They say that there is agony in defeat
Saddened faces, slumping shoulders, and dragging feet.
But really failing to accomplish what we desire,
Means we have to try another way to succeed and maintain why we were first inspired.

We can learn from our mistakes,
But do we have what it takes?
To shake off any sorrows,
that we might take a chance at our tomorrows?

Continue to keep our heads held high
Doesn’t mean our emoticons we deny.
It just means we don’t drown in the agony of defeat,
But we try again and again until we succeed.
