Thought and Poem – August 29, 2014
For many of us, getting up in the morning can be difficult. The motivation may just not there. The body may not be willing. We may not want to have to deal with situations that we have to start dealing with when we get up. And since I am one of those people who are up most of the nighttime because I can’t sleep…I am not a morning person myself. Any of the reasons just stated would just be another excuse for me to stay in bed.
Now even if we don’t get up ourselves, those around us may not feel like we do today and they are up bright and early and looking forward to the day. They gather in the kitchen and you can hear them getting their breakfast, maybe talking about what they plan to do once they leave the house. Still we just don’t have the spirit to join them in this everyday ritual. No today.
Family members may come to say good bye before they go out the door and they tease you to get up and share in the wonderful day ahead. Bah! Still, we wish to stay in bed, and we do…even after the house is quiet again. Warm and cozy under our blankets with our head on a soft pillow. We stretch our bodies as far as we can but we are still not budging.

As we lay there rebelliously fighting the fact that we know we should get up, the remaining smells of the morning breakfast linger in the home and find their way to our noses. We get thinking…did they have Apple Butter on their toast? Was that turkey bacon, or the real thing? Did they find the remaining Twinkie still left in the box I forgetfully left on the counter last night? And then the strongest and longest lasting smell of the coffee tempts us to… insanity.
Here it comes….the stomach will not accept that we did not have our breakfast yet, the need to know if the stress-reducing Twinkie survived the greedy hands of family members, and then we question if they all remembered to put the milk back in the refrigerator…these all gnaw at us and…we have to get up.

We drag our bodies down the hall, avoiding any connection with mirrors, and we anxiously enter the kitchen. We are surprised that a plate with bacon and eggs is in the oven/on warm, coffee has been set on “keep warm.” You linger over to the box of Twinkies on the counter, and with your heart pounding you carefully lift the cover off the box to see if the lone Twinkie is still there. It is! We have our cups of coffee, the eggs and bacon and we start to come alive. Now there is no need to slack off any more today…it is going to be a wonderful day!

Got Sleep?
This staying up at night is for the birds,
I mean, I want to wake up from my sleep in the morning like the rest of the world,
And have wished to have slept the whole night through,
It would be a new experience, and a very nice thing to do.
Warm milk doesn’t cut it,
Nor does soft music,
Nope sleepy teas haven’t worked so far,
Getting some shut eye for some reason for me it seems to be so hard.
I don’t know the reasons why sleep does not come my way,
What I do know is that it just seems to stay away.
However, I will catch a wink or two now and then,
And before I know it, well, it is morning again.
Alert! When I awaken when the alarm clock goes off, give me a few minutes to unscramble my brain,
So that your, “Good morning honey, or mommy,” wont drive me mentally insane.
I will need me some time to get my act together in the brain dead condition I may be in,
Then when I will have resumed being human, I will declare, “Morning can begin!”
