Alone in a Crowd

Thought – August 6, 2014

I went to an event a couple of weeks ago and I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. There were other people who were also invited there, but somehow some felt as if they were being left out of the picture. How is it possible to be in a room full of people and still feel “alone” in the crowd? It happens, I know because I have felt it. You may have experienced this feeling too.

Fifty or sixty years ago when you entered a room, it was unheard of not greet anyone that was in the room. It was unheard of to talk to one person and not engage all those in the room in the conversation, even if we were among strangers. We made eye contact, we spoke to one another and we interacted. There was an interchange. Not so today. What happened?

It almost seems wrong to me that when we are in a crowd surrounded by people we know; it still seems as if we are strangers. People can’t be bothered to even give another, a courtesy nod as they pass each other as they walk around the room. There are no warm smiles, our eyes don’t meet and no words are uttered. For certain, something is definitely wrong with this picture especially we are strangers among family and friends.

When I go to an event, you won’t see me standing alone in the room. If a person is too shy to come to me, well I go do them! There is no chance that they will get away from me. I don’t like it when we are in a large group and someone is being left out. When people come around me, I want them to know I care about them, and that they can feel comfortable in my presence. Wish it could be the same for everyone.

Do you Feel Alone in a Crowd?

It feels some days, that when we are standing alone in a crowd,
Everyone is busy doing their own thing and moving along,
No one paying any attention to anyone, well at least not right now,
And even though there are many people around I can feel alone somehow.?

However can this be?
There are so many people around me?
Each is going their own way;
Not one person is acknowledging my presence today?

It find it hard to accept this to be a true fact in life,
That no one gives you a smile or notices your existence; somehow it doesn’t seem right.
The world seems ever more, so cold to me,
People are void of joy; not loving, some just barely breathing.

This is very evident when my eyes meet theirs,
Their eyes are empty; all they can do is stare.
Still you offer a warm smile as you pass them by,
And when they don’t respond; you might wonder why?

Why did they not return your smile?
You ponder on this thought a little and then you sigh.
How so many people can be together in a crowd,
Yet stand-alone somehow?
