Traps Set to Catch Asian Longhorned Beetles

Traps are being set up to catch the invasive beetles.

Some 370 Asian Longhorned Beetle traps are being strategically placed in the lower canopy of selected trees around Shrewsbury, Northborough, Marlborough, Westborough, Sterling, West Boylston and Clinton, said Julie Coop, a spokesperson for the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

These traps are black and about four-feet long with a white collection cup at the base. They are baited with a cocktail to lure that beetle.

"This cocktail combination has been proven to be effective at attracting the Beetle if it is in the area," said Coop. "In prior years, these traps have been effective in identifying previously unknown areas of infestation."

These traps were placed earlier this month and will remain until September, with authorities checking them biweekly.
