Goodwill’s Boston Marathon Team Runs for the Youth Initiative
'Running for Great Kids' aims to raise $100,000 for underserved youth

BOSTON (April 12, 2017) - For the 13th consecutive year, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries’ Running for Great Kids will be participating in the 2017 Boston Marathon. The team will be raising money for Goodwill’s Youth Initiative.
This year’s team has 22 runners from around the country participating in the historic race, from as far away as California to right here in Boston. But no matter the distance they have to travel, the runners are eager to participate in the marathon to support Goodwill’s mission services. So far, the team has raised $65,174 of its $100,000 goal for the Youth Initiative.
“What I really liked about the Goodwill team is the Youth Initiative and how it’s helping kids in underserved communities. We have to start at the beginning if we want to help society as a whole and if we want to grow as a country and be better,” said Deirdre McCarrick, a Massachusetts native and member of the 2017 Running for Great Kids team.
The Youth Initiative is a program set to encourage academics, service and leadership in youth living in underserved Boston communities, primarily Dorchester, Mattapan, and Roxbury. Through its after-school program and mentoring partnerships, the Youth Initiative encourages high school students to conquer their individual obstacles and excel in life.
McCarrick, who worked with underserved youth in New York City, continued: “We really have to increase the opportunities for young people. That is something I care tremendously about. I saw the impact. The more attention they get and the more resources they get, there is a bigger impact that can be had.”
