Salem State University Goes the Test Optional Route for Admissions
Standardized testing no longer required for undergraduate admission to Salem State University, beginning in fall of 2016.

Future students looking to be admitted to Salem State University may no longer have to take the dreaded SAT.
Salem State University announced earlier this week that it will pilot a “test optional” pathway for students applying to the fall 2016 semester. Standardized tests scores (SAT/ACT) were previously mandatory for most seeking undergraduate admission to the university.
Joining a growing number of institutions that have made these standardized tests optional as part of the application process, Salem State will now notify prospective students that the fulfillment of academic admissions requirements will be based on their high school course selection and grade point average (GPA).

“By eliminating test score requirements and focusing our admission decisions on a student’s academic work and grade point average, we believe an increased number of qualified students will look at Salem State,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Life Scott James. “Furthermore, research has shown that focusing on a student’s academic work and grade point average are better predictors for academic success.”
While students may submit test scores for consideration as part of their application, admissions counselors will place more emphasis on other information to determine whether an applicant is a good candidate to succeed at Salem State.

“Our goal is to better ensure equitable access for high school students whose academic potential may not be adequately reflected by standardized test scores.” said Patricia Maguire Meservey, president of Salem State. She also noted that this is a pilot for fall 2016 and that the university will gather data and then evaluate the possibility of making this a permanent change to the admissions process.
