$110 Million Drug Plant Coming to Norwood

Moderna Therapeutics Inc. has announced that they will produce a portfolio of drugs at a plant in Norwood.

NORWOOD, MA — A $110 million, 200,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility in Norwood will produce drugs for a Cambridge-based company.

Moderna Therapeutics, a clinical stage biotechnology company, announced Wednesday that they will set up shop in Norwood and have signed a 15-year lease to build a state-of-the-art Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) clinical manufacturing facility in Norwood.

The five-year-old company has about 460 employees, with 100 moving to the new location and 100 more to be hired.

The new plant, scheduled to open in 2018, will produce clinical grade mRNA therapies and vaccines for Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) toxicology studies as well as Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical studies. At the site, Moderna will carry out all manufacturing activities—from raw material production to active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs), formulation, filling and finish, according to a press release.
